Here are some important questions you should ask when selecting a hotel in the USA:
- Am I getting the best price for my budget? The last thing you want to do when booking a hotel is to the pay the Rack Rate. This is usually the top rate that the Hotel charges for its rooms. You can get substantial discounts on the rack rate by booking online or going through a reputable travel agent or airline. A good example of this can be found at the Starwood Preferred Properties website. You can also get excellent last minute rates from sites like Wofif.com. The downside of booking online is that you have to pay for the accommodation in advance and penalties may apply if you cancel. Read the fine print before you click the Secure Booking button.
- Make sure that the Hotel you choose is in a safe, secure neighborhood. You don't want to be a hotel prisoner and this can happen if you choose a cheap hotel in a seedy neighborhood.
- Be very specific about the type of room you require. If you prefer a non-smoking room then ask for it. If want a high room with a view and a king size bed then you lose nothing by asking for it. Most hotels are only too pleased to try and meet your needs.
- Room service is an important aspect of hotel selection. If you prefer in-room dining then it might be worthwhile to try and obtain a copy of the in-room dining menu so that you can see the types and prices of food on offer. Kapalua Bay Hotel in Hawaii provide details of their in-room dining menu online (Don't read this menu if you are hungry as it looks delicious).
- Do you need to access the Internet? Feel free to use any high-speed Internet connection provided in the room but check the rates first as these can be exorbitant. The best phone rate in most hotels is the local call rate and therefore if you dial up the Internet locally the prices will be more acceptable.
- Determine if the Hotel has speedy checkout. You don't want to find that you miss your plane or train because of long lines at the checkout counter.
- Does the hotel have a swimming pool, a gym, private office accommodation, a business center plus all the other facilities that you may need outside of your room?.
- If you need to spend a lot of nights in Hotels on business trips then try to join a Hotel Chain that will reward your loyalty with free upgrades etc.
